How to use the Candy Cane Writing Prompt...

These are some things to consider before giving your child this writing prompt. If you are unable to read the Legend of the Candy Cane, then talk with your child about how a candy cane can remind them of Jesus. These are some things that your child and you may want to talk about before setting them on the task of writing about how a candy cane reminds them of Jesus.

  • When the candy cane is turned upside down it resembles a “J” for Jesus.
  • In its upright position, the candy cane resembles a shepherd’s staff. This symbol represents more than one reminder of Jesus. In the Bible, Jesus is referred to as our shepherd and us as His sheep.
  • God also announced to nearby shepherds that baby Jesus was born to go worship him in the manger. Out of everyone God could have told to go worship baby Jesus, He instructs shepherds to go. Shepherds who are dirty, certainly smell bad, and who were considered no one special. That is a direct correlation to us, people who are imperfect.
  • The colors of the candy cane should remind of us of the salvation He offers. God’s son, Jesus shed his blood on the cross for our sins. The red represents that blood. Besides the red, the white symbolizes Jesus wiping our sins clean and washing us of our sins.
  • The stripes of the candy cane represent the stripes He wore that healed us. By His stripes, we are healed.

May your Christmas be a blessed one and I pray that every time you look at a candy cane, you are reminded of Jesus.
