Trees as Habitats Lesson

Find Habitats in Trees

Most of us have gone on nature walks and seen the evidence of animals living in trees. This is an effective way to introduce tree habitats to kids. Start this lesson by taking a walk out in some woods or a park. You want to encourage students to look for nests, squirrels running up trees, bugs crawling on bark, and any  holes or burrows that may be nestled in the roots of a tree. While on your walk, discuss where it is that we call home and explain that a habitat is the place we and animals live. It is the place that keeps us safe and warm.

I uploaded this video (it isn’t mine :)) for those of you who may struggle knowing how to lead a group of students on such a walk. The presenter of this video gives excellent insight into how animals use trees as habitats.

The second video I uploaded is for those of you who do not have access to exploring a forest. It is hard for me to imagine that, but I know that for some of you, this may be the case. The woman in this video does an excellent job at explaining how the different parts of the tree gives way to becoming a habitat for a variety of animals.

Trees as Habitats Hand-out

This hand-out is free through the Project Learning Tree website. It is goes over what a habitat is and is helpful for teachers who are looking for guidance on how to lead a discussion about tree habitats.

Tree Habitats Activity Sheet

The Tree Habitats Printable Activity Sheet is ideal for younger learners. My son is a preschooler and of the age where coloring and gluing are appropriate. He isn’t the best cutter yet, so I had to assist him on this task. However, my daughter, who is 8, enjoyed this activity and was able to do it on her own. It was a fun way to bring a hands-on activity to lesson.
