End of the School Year Activities

End of the School Year Activities

Our list of End of the School Year Activities is easy and accessible for most. Some of the activities are printables, while others are not. You will find quick classroom activities to fill in the gaps between larger activities, and some suggestions take more time. These end of the school year activities are meant to spark your creativity and resourcefulness in the final days before summer. Being a yearlong homeschooler for years, some of these activities were helpful in times of needing a break from the norm. However you choose to use them, have fun learning and find grace in the messy parts of your day. This is something I’ve been learning more of lately.

End of the School Year Activities

These end-of-the-school-year activities will encourage you to finish strong. When I first started homeschooling, I homeschooled year-round. During the summer months, we did things a little differently. We changed our activities to include more outdoor field trips, documentaries, and other forms of enrichment. As the boys got older, our summer routine changed, and we tended to have a summer filled with camps and baseball. The activities below are helpful for however you choose to homeschool. The end-of-the-school-year activities listed fit into any school schedule you keep. Look through the suggestions to be inspired to try something new.

Book & Movie Combo

I wish I had time to create a post about this topic. We have found some pretty awesome book and movie combos that are educational, entertaining, and spark interesting conversations. Until I can find the time to upload our full list of recommendations, let me give you some of our favorites.

The Prince and the Pauper was one that all the kids appreciated. Anne of Green Gables is another. We also liked War Horse for some of the older kids. Stuart Little, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Nim’s Island, Because of Winn Dixie, would also make our list of suggestions. The kids and I loved Charlotte’s Web as well as The Secret Garden and I would be missing one of the boys’ favorites if I didn’t include Holes. Before I get on a soapbox, let me add Black Stallion, Call of the Wild, White Fang, Old Yellow, Sounder, and the Little House on the Prairie shows and corresponding books. There are so many great reads! Book and Movie combos are effective all year round, however, they are perfectly listed as one of our end-of-the-school-year activities.

Test Taking Tips & Strategies

I’ve never met someone who liked testing, but it seems that standardized testing is a hurdle we all must jump sooner or later. I’ve included this as one of end-of the-school-year activities since so many of us test towards the end of the year. Our FREE Test Taking Tips & Strategies will help you and your students prepare for testing day.  Amongst the resources, you will find an informative slideshow, an effective student hand-out, and a useful testing poster.

Summer Bucket List

The Summer Bucket List is one of our newer end of the school year activities. I recently heard another teacher ask a student to name one thing that would be on their summer bucket list. It inspired me to create a quick printable that could be used in class and at my kitchen table! This end of the school year printable encourages students to set goals for the summer. You can easily have students share their bucket list with the class. I always allow my students to draw and write their bucket list.

Summer Reading Logs

Do you want to encourage reading in your home this summer? These Free Summer Reading Logs are an ideal end of the school year printable to implement as the regular school year comes to a close. You can’t go wrong with positive incentives and accountability. Most of us would love to see our kids sitting on the couch reading a book rather than staring at a screen. Our Free Summer Reading Logs will give you the accountability and push to read more!

School Year Recap

This free end of the school year printable would work well in a classroom or coop setting where the students can work on recalling their favorite moments of the year. It is an activity that can be shared to the class or sent home as a keepsake. Sometimes the simplest activities are the best. This is one of those simple, low prep activities that teachers love.

ABC Collage

In the past, I have had students work individually to create an A to Z  Science Recap for the year. Now, this can be adapted to fit homeschoolers easily. Try having your student create an A to Z school recap book. Students pick a topic they learned about during the year for each letter and then draw something to represent it and write 1-3 sentences about the topic. I love this idea since it can be adapted to fit all ages. A could represent atoms or automobiles. B could represent the Bible or biology. The Civil War or cat could be used for C. Start by helping your student create a booklet with plain sheets of white computer paper. Make a booklet by stapling or put it into a slender 3-ring folder. It becomes an end of the school year project that helps review the year’s subjects.

Enrichment Activities

Remember that any enrichment activity is the ideal end of the school year activity! As we complete our language arts workbooks and math curriculum for the year, it is the ideal time to explore all the things we didn’t find time for during the regular school year. What about that field trip to the zoo or the museum you’ve been wanting to go see. Have you been to the county library lately? Crafts, baking, STEM activities should definitely make the list of end of the school year activities. Everything from painting a “masterpiece” to packing a picnic and going on a hike. These are all fabulous ideas for the end of the school year.
