Projects are an important part of any strong solar system unit study. While worksheets, notes, and videos all have their place, students need opportunities to show what they know in a more meaningful way. This Planet Research Worksheet Pack helps guide that process by giving students a clear structure for gathering and organizing information about a planet. The Planet Research Worksheet Pack helps students to organize their research about a planet helping them build the foundation needed to create a complete project. Below, I will explain how we have incorporated this pack into our homeschool. This Planet Research Worksheet Pack is great for families and co-ops, as it allows parents and teachers to modify expectations based on students’ abilities. There are four sheets in the Planet Research Worksheets. The first two sheets are strictly fact-finding graphic organizers that help guide students to research their planet. While using these sheets, students will read, research, and summarize key facts such as rotation, special features, where the planet’s name was derived, and other important details about the planet they are researching. The built-in graphic organizer also supports an often-skipped step in writing—brainstorming—making it easier for students to turn their notes into a well-organized report or project.
The second two sheets are two different Planet Project Templates. One provides lined paper for the student to write their paper on, while the other is a draw-and-write style project sheet. This allows you to choose what best fits your student’s ability and your goals. In the past, I have required my older students to write a one-page paper while giving me a full-page drawing of their planet, labeling any key notes about their planet.
These planet research worksheets are designed to guide students step-by-step through the research and writing process. Begin by having students choose a planet and use the fact-gathering sheets to record important information such as rotation, key features, and other details. Encourage them to read carefully and summarize in their own words as they complete the organizer. Once their research is complete, students can use the writing page to turn their notes into a structured report. For a more creative option, the draw-and-write page allows students to illustrate their planet and explain their thinking. This flexible format makes it easy to adapt the activity for different ages and learning styles.
These planet coloring posters are a great way for students to add a visual element to their research project. After completing their writing, students can color and label their planet to create a simple, engaging display. This is especially helpful for visual learners and makes a great addition to presentations or classroom displays. Students can be encouraged to add three compelling notes to their visual or explain why they colored their planet the way they did. Honestly, it is a valuable add-on to the project.
