Solar System Hanger Mobile

Solar System Hanger Mobile

We love having multiple options when it comes to reviewing the same information. Sometimes, an activity sounds great for one class while a different activity looks to be a better fit for another. That can be true of students too. One year we used this activity sheet to create a poster. My kids titled it, “Our Solar System,” pasted the sun and then drew orbits around the sun. Then they pasted the planets accordingly. They colored the planets and even drew a rocket ship and the asteroid belt. This time around, we used the solar system cut-outs to create this Solar System Hanger Mobile. Try it!

How to make the Solar System Hanger Mobile

Color the Parts of the Solar System

My girls started by coloring the parts of their solar system. We didn’t have all day to work on this project, so we skimped on drawing and cutting out a rocket or a comet.

Cut out the Parts of the Solar System

However, we talked about all the other objects that are in our solar system. This was the perfect opportunity to talk about how our solar system is just one of millions in the Milky Way Galaxy. We discussed how all the planets orbit the sun and how our sun is really a star. After coloring the planets, my girls cut out their planets. The 5 year old needed help with this task.

Decorate, cut, and slide cover over hanger

Once we cut out the parts of our solar system, the girls decorated the hanger cover with asteroids and stars. You will need to fold the cover in half and slit a small hole in the center of the crease. This will allow you to slide the hanger through. We used plastic kid hangers. This seemed to work best.

Tie 9 Pieces of String/Yarn to your hanger to attach sun/planets

Big brother stepped in to assist little sisters with attaching their ribbon onto their hangers. We did not create any other celestial bodies or rockets, so we needed 9 pieces of string to hang our parts of the solar system. This is one step of the project that I am not fond of. In a perfect world, I would prefer the kids to be able to create something without needing outside help. However, sometimes you just need to help.

Attach Parts of the Solar System Hanger Mobile

Lastly, attach the parts of the solar system to your hanger. Voila! Both girls Solar System Hanger Mobiles are done! They are currently hanging up in their room. Sweet success!
