How to use the Word Family House Worksheet

This printable is a functional tool to use when introducing word families to your student. You can print and laminate your word family house worksheet to use over and over again. However, I’m really not very good at cleaning them off right away. So, for us, we choose to print them out in bulk (maybe, 10 copies) and then use them as we need them.

Start by writing the word family ending at the top of the house. For example, write, “-at” or “-ot.” You and your child can then decipher what sounds can be put in front of the ending sound to make a word. If you add a “b” to “-at,” then you make the word, “bat.”

Use word slides with your house...

I really like to use word slides while working with the word family house worksheet. These word slides are super easy to make. We literally made these on the fly! All you need is construction paper, markers, and a paper plate. First, cut a strip of construction paper out about 1 1/2 inches wide and the longest length of the paper. Next, slice two slits across on your paper plate about 2 inches apart and parallel to each other. This is where your strip of construction paper will slide in. I’m sure you can tell from the picture how to construct this hands-on activity. Make one every day for a week to make a collection!

As you can see from the photo, I opted to have my son write the words while using his word slides. I’m not really sure where we downloaded the word slide in the picture, but you can find some printable ones pretty easy by searching online. Another great tool to use with the Word Family House is paint chip sliders. We made some years ago, those are worth looking into for a fun activity!
