NUMBERS and COUNTING

Numbers and Cpunting

When my oldest was younger, I was quick to download, print, laminate, punch holes,… really, whatever it took to make some cute activity for his lesson. Don’t get me wrong, the time and effort to make those learning tools benefited my younger children too. However, nowadays, I am quick to teach my preschoolers with less preparation and effort on my part. Teaching Numbers and Counting has become one subject that we teach using household items we readily have available. Use our FREE Numbers & Counting printables, slideshows, videos, and activities!

Numbers and Counting Cut & Paste Activity

This 1-10 Number Recognition Cut & Paste Activity Sheet is an effective tool to use for older preschoolers and kindergarten students. Your student can practice their fine motor skills cutting out the numbers. Then, your student can match the numbers to the number words by gluing them in the appropriate box. Have your child point to each of the numbers and count them out to you. Happy learning!

Number Concepts 1-10 Cut & Paste

The Number Concepts cut & paste activity sheet allows your child to practice their fine motor skills cutting while reinforcing number concepts. Learning the number words can take longer for a child to grasp than actually counting numerically. Presenting a variety of activities that teach the same thing but in a different way is an effective way to teach. It can take lots of repetition to learn number words. Happy learning!

Numbers 1-12 Craft Sheets

This 1-12 Number Craft Sheets can be used however you see fit. Depending on your creativity, these number craft sheets can be plain coloring sheets or hands-on activity sheets! 0-20 Counting Police Cars Slideshow

1-10 Counting Birds Reader

This emergent reader features the sight words: there, are, and number words 1-10. Take a journey counting birds one to ten. Black and white clipart help to keep the printing down to a minimum for those of you looking to make a handheld booklet.

To create a booklet for little hands, print 2 pages to a sheet. Once printed, cut the sheets in half to create a booklet. It isn’t hard to do. Sometimes it is just nice to have a tangible book. Your child can color it as well.

1-10 Animals Number Reader Slideshow

This slideshow reader was created for preschool students. It combines children’s love of animals with counting and high frequency words to create a functional educational tool. This reader focuses on the sight words: there, is, and 1-10 number words. Check it out! Happy learning!

Create your own handheld book by printing 2 pages per sheet. Afterwards, cut the sheets in half. Put them in order and staple! Easy!

Numbers & Counting with LEGOS

Lego Learning

Learning with Legos is fun and the kids love it! In this example, I simply used a permanent marker to write the number and the number word on each of the Lego pieces. My child is handed the bag of Lego pieces and told to stack them from least to greatest starting with 1 at the bottom. It helps us to review counting, but is great practice for number word recognition!

In addition to this example,  I have used the smaller Lego pieces before and only wrote the numbers on them. The child is given a bag of Lego pieces numbered 1-25 or more. My kiddo is then asked to build a tower with the number one at the bottom all the way up to 25! That one is fun… especially if you go up to 50!

Crafty Counting Caterpillar

The Homeschool Daily

Often I hear moms telling other moms that they teach their children together, but other than saying it, there isn’t always an explanation. Here is an example of using the same activity, but making it work for two different children. This is my kindergarten student and my 3 year old. Using the Crafty Caterpillar I was able to review with one child counting by tens and with the other counting to ten. Have fun!

Numbers & Counting Plates

Number Plates can be used over and over again. One thing that has helped me to homeschool multiple children is to have learning tools on hand that can be pulled from quickly. Number Plates stay in my cabinet and when necessary are ready to be used with a myriad of different manipulatives… buttons, marbles, or beans- the possibilities are endless. If you have colored manipulatives, you can make this activity one that focuses on numbers and colors. Making number plates that count up to 10 is ideal. Happy learning!

Homemade Numbers & Counting Book

This number book is quick and simple to make. Take 5 sheets of computer paper and fold them in half horizontally. Next, write, “My Number Book,” on the front. On the first inside page on the right, write the number and the number word large enough so that the child can trace it. You can even mark dots on the letters where the child should begin to write their letter.

Add a set of stickers that are of interest to the child. For my son, I might give him monster trucks. For my daughter, butterflies are always a winner. The child’s job is to put the correct # of stickers on the page. We work through the book over the course of a couple of days or one page a day depending on the child’s age and attention span. Happy learning!

Numbers & Counting Eggs

Number eggs are a hands-on math activity that can be changed to fit most elementary school students. You could easily switch the written cards to feature addition, subtraction, multiplication or division problems. First, number the eggs and bottom of the egg container (where each egg sits) 1-12.

For the number recognition eggs, I cut out 12 small pieces of paper. Then, I wrote the number words (1-12) on one side of the paper. On the backside of the paper I drew dots to represent the number. You can see this in the picture. So, if your child can not read, this is their way to get around that… count the dots to match to the number egg.

*Try using an egg carton with 18 eggs!

Hands-on Approach to Number Cards

I bought this set of cards from the Dollar Tree years ago. It is a memory game. However, no matter what type of card set you have, there is always some spin you can put on them to create a hands-on activity for your student. For me, blue painters tape always comes in handy when attaching the cards to whatever surface it is you are adhering to. The set of cards I was working with could easily be recreated with index cards. One set of cards has the number on it, while the matching cards have the number word on them.

Numbers & Counting

First, I laid the cards out on the table into two separate piles. Next, I put pieces of blue tape onto the window and then asked my child to put the 1 up, 2, 3, and so forth. After we put the numbers up, I then asked her to match the number words underneath. This allows you to review the cards over and over again at every meal. Great way to turn a memory match game into something else.

Numbers & Counting Activities

When your child learns how to count to 20, that’s awesome. But when they learn to recognize the number words up to 20, well, that’s something else. Here are a few things that we do to tackle that task. There are worksheet sets that deal with this skill, but there are times when my kiddo doesn’t necessarily want a worksheet. They want something that allows them to move and do. This is where Homemade Homeschool comes in and saves the day!

The Homeschool Daily

Cut out strips of construction paper. Write the number word and allow your child to cut out pictures and glue, use stamps, or even stickers.

The Homeschool Daily

This version is virtually the same thing, but in the shape of a number.

The Homeschool Daily

Using sentence strips, write the number word. On index cards cut in half, write the corresponding numbers. Have your child match and glue them on.

BIG & little Hands Activity

Preschool & Kindergarten Resources

I believe this sheet is simple enough that it almost seems silly of me to explain. On the side that says, “BIG,” trace your hand. On the side that says, “little,” trace out your child’s hand. Take the time to count out all the fingers on the hands. Happy learning!

Counting Hands & Fingers

My preschool kids have always loved to have their hands traced on paper. So, why not make it into a learning opportunity? The words right, left, and numbers 1-10 were written on colored construction paper. My child cut and paste them on the poster. Then, we played a simple game. I would ask them to raise their right hand. Raise your left hand. Put your right hand down. Lift your left hand higher. You get the idea! Happy learning!

If you have a toddler than you know that he or she wants to do school too… or she may cause mischief while you attempt school with others! Most of the time, I try to differentiate the lesson to fit my toddlers level. In this cause, my toddler had her hand traced. Next, I wrote the words, “one hand” and “two hands” on the paper while she said them out loud. I touch her hands and say, “one hand” and “two hands.” We then sing a simple song, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, pause, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, pause, numbers, numbers, let’s do it again!
