Like most of you, during the years my kids are learning to read, I use a set of purchased readers. However, there are times it is nice to take a break from the norm… to change it up a bit. When my eldest was just a toddler, I was on the search for free printable emergent readers. At the time, it was nice to be able to give him a book to hold and color on while we read. Like most little ones, he was hard on his books. So, printable emergent readers were perfect for him. He felt like they were his books. They went with him in the car, in his bed, and even on the potty… don’t ask. So, if you too are looking for FREE Printable Emergent Readers, take a look at our collection. How to Print our FREE Printable Emergent Readers

In general, our free printable emergent readers feature phonetic friendly words and sight words. A repetitive sentence structure will also help to encourage confidence in your new reader. To make for easy printing, many of our readers have black and white images to make printing easier and cheaper! Most of the PDF’s will need to be printed two pages to a sheet. You will need to modify your printer settings to accommodate this set-up. A few of the readers will need to printed as normal. Just make sure to look at your print preview before printing. After your PDF is printed, cut your sheets in half, assemble, and staple. I suggest using a paper cutter if you have one… they are so handy. I’ve had mine for almost 20 years and it has been well worth it! Huge time saver!

Free Printable Emergent Readers

Use this FREE preschool resource as a reader and activity book. Each page features an animal that can be colored to match the sentence. For example, “I see a red bird.” Your child can color the bird red to match the sentence. The sentences provide repetition for the sight words, I, see, and a. Animals Live on a Farm Reader

Colors & Shapes Reader

In this Colors & Shapes Emergent Reader, the sight words featured are: look, at, and the. Each page repeats a similar sentence structure. Don’t let the slideshow format scare you off. Actually, the slideshows can be helpful for those not wanting to print. Since some of the books use colorful clipart, you may find it resourceful to use the slideshow as opposed to using up your colored ink. The ability to click through an emergent reader quickly becomes appealing when aware of ink costs! For those looking to create a hard copy, print the PDF two pages to a sheet. This emergent reader is a fun and interactive booklet. In this booklet, your student will need to read the sentence to identify what picture they are to color. For example, all of the sentences resemble the following one, “Find that fish.” Once your student reads the sentence, they are to find and color the item on the page.
