Easy Bird Nest Craft

Easy Bird Nest Craft

In our homeschool, we like to use crafts to create a learning experience. Don’t get me wrong, a craft is fun all by itself, but we like to use them as a tool to teach something greater. This easy bird nest craft allows me to teach my kids about bird nest construction and why they are important. Add this easy bird nest craft into your homeschool along with our other Bird Unit Resources including our FREE Anatomy of a Bird Worksheets!

Why do birds build nests?

I like to use a video like this one to open up discussions around the question, “Why do birds build nests?” Students will come up with all kinds of answers which provides an effective opening to the lesson.

Look at Real Bird Nests

Over the years, we have collected bird nests that have fallen from trees around our property. If you are able to let your kids look at nests up close, what a treat. The nests we found have horse hair, leaves, sticks, trash, and hay string in them. I also encourage you to look at pictures or books about birds since there are so many different types of bird nests to investigate.

Easy Bird Nest Craft Materials

The materials list isn’t bad at all! If you know me at all, you know that most crafts I attempts use items that I have on hand at home. In this case, we cut brown paper lunch bags into strips, used Elmer’s glue, and also cut out a few ovals out of blue construction paper. Oh… don’t forget the paper plate. It is your base. Easy!

After looking at real bird nests, we started to create our easy bird nest craft. We start with adding lots of Elmer’s glue to our paper plate.

Next, we begin layering the straw, I mean, strips of paper, to build our nest. One of my kids talked about adding yarn and other things to our nest, but we kept it simple. Once the kids are happy with their nests, they begin to cut out their paper eggs. We discussed the possible color of birds’ eggs… brown, white, blue, speckled, etc.

As the kids are finishing up their easy bird nest craft, we talk about all the different places birds can live… water, nests, holes in trees, etc.  If your kids are anything like mine, they love the idea of helping a bird find a home. This might be the perfect time to talk about building a bird house! On to the next adventure…
