The Where in the World Am I? Project is a 8-page activity book and slideshow combination. This is a classic way to introduce, reiterate, and review some of the basics about where we are in the big wide world. Discover where you are in the galaxy, solar system, planet, continent, country, state, and all the way back home. What an excellent way to take a tried and true project geared for younger learners and make it accessible for older students.

This activity book can be used with multiple children and larger groups. It was created to accommodate a large coop class made up of a wide range of aged students. Using the slideshow with the booklet makes for an educational exploration.

This will be the first page of your Where in the World am I? booklet. There is a place at the bottom for children to write their name. I find this especially important when dealing with a coop class. There is always someone leaving their booklet behind!

We start out in the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way galaxy is a spiral galaxy. I encourage my students to highlight the area over where our solar system is located. We discuss how our sun, which is a medium sized star, is only one star out of countless others in the galaxy.

Where in the World am I

Moving closer into home, we find ourselves in our solar system. The sun in the center with the 8 planets orbiting around it. We take a chance to talk about the inner planets and outer planets. Fun stuff! The kids color in the planets’ features, however, the Earth is a definite!

Where in the World am I

Let’s travel to the 3rd planet from the sun… Earth! The first verse of the Bible says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This is home for us. Land and big blue oceans cover this great planet. We discuss the amount of water on the Earth and its forms.

Now on the planet we have 7 continents. This is a perfect opportunity to review them with your student. Encourage them to color their continent- North America!

Once you zoom in closer, we locate our country and color it in. The bulk of the United States is nestled in between Canada and Mexico. Don’t forget to find and color Alaska also!

This is a great opportunity to go over your address with your younger kids. For your older students, this affords you a chance to discuss the counties, cities, communities, and different types of homes.

Food for thought...

Looking for a more permanent science curriculum? Even though we pursue various science units that encompass labs and such, we also use a science textbook each year. Some might say that our science units supplement our textbook, while others would say the opposite to be true. The labs, experiments, graphic organizers, videos, and other activities bring the textbook information to life.

What causes an ice boat to float

We use Abeka Science textbooks. I love that they incorporate God and His sovereignty into their curriculum. When I taught in the public school system, I noticed that many of my students were lacking in vocabulary. This made it difficult for them to understand the why behind many of our investigations. Unfortunately, they were deficient in their background knowledge. Our science time would be lacking too if it weren’t for the rich vocabulary and science language that we find in our science textbook and readers.
