Matter Unit Study

Matter Unit Study

In this Matter Unit Study, you will find everything you need to teach matter to your students. We offer a basic introduction to matter and what it is. The opening slideshow below explains what matter is and then the remaining resources build from there. I encourage you to add in video clips and plenty of demos, labs, or other hands-on activities. The reading, note-taking, and comprehension questions help students to build vocabulary. However, it is the hands-on activities that help students stay engaged and learning on a whole different level. The unit is broken into sections starting with Properties of Matter and then States of Matter. Once you have covered these topics, you will finish up with Changing States of Matter. *Be sure to check our our full array of homeschool science resources here including science units and labs & experiments!

Introduction to Matter

Matter Slideshow

This slideshow is a great introduction to matter. Our “What is Matter?” slideshow defines matter including reviewing volume and mass. Examples of matter and the smallest unit of matter is identified. Atoms are mentioned in this slideshow, but deep study of atoms including molecules, elements, and mixtures are not hit upon.

Matter Pop-Quiz

Matter Unit Study

At the end of the slideshow, there is a short pop-quiz to test your student comprehension of the learned material. Use this as a ticket out the door or as a group activity.

Explore Physical and Chemical Properties

In this post, your students will explore physical and chemical properties of matter. There are two slideshows accompanied by corresponding graphic organizers. These are ideal for science notebooks and help kids to sort new information. There are also several hands-on demos, labs, and videos suggested to create a dynamic unit study. Explore States of Matter

Most of us think about learning the states of matter when we think about a Matter Unit Study. True, teaching the states of matter is important. However, the key to this specific matter topic is to identify molecule movement and energy levels within each state of matter. Our FREE resources include a slideshow, cut & paste graphic organizer, a printable pamphlet, and more! Download your FREE States of Matter Printables now!

Explore Changing States of Matter

Once your students have a grasp of the different states of matter, it is time to move onto how each state of matter changes based on an increase or decrease of thermal energy. Exothermic and endothermic change is also defined along with the processes that states of matter go through when they change. For example, melting, freezing, condensation, and more are all included. Use our FREE slideshow, printables, and lab suggestions to make teaching easy! Read more about our Changing States of Matter Activities here!
