There are several easy lab investigations that can be used to help students understand that physical properties are ones that can seen and measured without changing the matter to something else. In the past, I have given students popcorn so that they can eat it, touch it, smell it, and hear it as it pops. It is easy to add a density lab to this unit. Our F loating Egg Lab or Salt Water Lab would work perfectly here.

This slideshow can easily be paired with one or more teacher demonstrations to really bring the class to life! Try burning paper in a closed jar or showing oxidation with cut up apple. Walk your class through seven chemical properties of matter including flammability and toxicity. Students will identify, define, and illustrate each of the chemical properties. Add in Teacher Demos and Video Clips

To create a layered lesson of learning that appeals to the broadest amount of students, teachers need to add a variety of activities to their lessons. In this setting, students will be engaged and find their class time interesting and challenging rather than boring. I advise adding in multiple short teacher demos such as the ones listed below. The Properties of Matter Activities come to life with the addition of the following labs, demos, and videos.

Rip paper up for Physical and then burn paper for Chemical
Add salt to water to change its density. Try out the Floating Egg Experiment.
Bring out rocks with different luster.
Use Ph strips to test the different Ph of liquids. Coke, water, and milk have always been good ones to test.
For oxidation, cut up apple slices until they turn brown. Share the extras with your students.
To demonstrate density, viscosity, and other physical properties, try layering liquids. Take a look at this lab.
