Draw and Describe Owls
The Draw and Describe Owls activity is a fun way to start a new unit study. Most children already have some knowledge of owls and are willing to share what it is they know. In this activity, encourage your students to draw an owl on their sheet and then describe owls. This is a great way to include the whole family in the opening activity. Our co-op group did a similar version of this activity. All kids, regardless of age, drew owls using the how-to sheets and then as a group brainstormed facts and details about owls they knew. Great anticipatory set!
Owl Coloring Sheets
This set of 9 owl coloring sheets is for fun. There is a variety of owl images for yours to color and doodle on. Thank you to ClipArt Library for these images. My girls are avid artists right now and often ask for me to print out coloring sheets for them to decorate. This set came about after one of those afternoons! These are also appropriate for older students. Some students are able to focus on educational videos and lectures easier if they have something to draw on while listening. Just a thought!
Our Owl Fact Sheet is perfect for younger students and for those students who flourish with a doodle sheet during a lecture or video. Personally, I used this fact sheet for a large group during a lecture on owls. It allowed younger students to color and take home the main points of the owl unit study.
All About Owls Guided Notes
The All About Owls Guided Notes is ideal for a traditional classroom setting and if you are training a child to be able to take notes. Note taking is a skill that students must learn to do. These guided notes help a student to begin learning this skill. The notes follow the slideshow along verbatim. There is an original copy of the notes included to act as a teacher’s key. For science teachers that require a science notebook, these guided notes fit well into your student goals for learned organization.

Besides reading library books, we like to start our Owl Unit Study with our All About Owls slideshow. It is the perfect science reader for students learning about the main characteristics of owls.
