Queen of Sheba and Solomon

Queen of Sheba and Solomon

Even though I was trained to be a middle school teacher, for whatever reason, only God knows, I have continuously been placed in preschool Sunday School rooms since I was in high school! Currently, I am sharing a preschool room with another mom of 6. One thing I have learned teaching preschool is to change the direction of the lesson several times. It is important to use visuals, songs, books, props, and anything else that will help the students connect to the lesson in a meaningful way. Teaching about the Queen of Sheba and her visit to Solomon is no different. In this post, you will find printable story visuals, fun ideas for props, a coloring sheet, and a printable activity sheet.

Queen of Sheba and Solomon Story

Who was the Queen of Sheba?

In the Bible, the Queen of Sheba is described as a powerful and wealthy ruler who traveled from her kingdom to visit King Solomon in Jerusalem, recorded in 1 Kings 10 and 2 Chronicles 9. She had heard of Solomon’s great wisdom and the blessings God had given him, so she came with a large caravan carrying gold, spices, and precious stones to test him with difficult questions. Solomon answered all of her inquiries, impressing her with his wisdom, the splendor of his court, and the prosperity of his kingdom. In awe, she praised the God of Israel for making Solomon king and for granting such wisdom and blessing to his people. After exchanging gifts, she returned to her land, leaving behind a story that became a symbol of seeking wisdom and recognizing God’s blessings.

Use the Bible Story Character Cards

One effective way to tell any story to preschoolers is to have story cards. I created these using images I found on Clipart Library. To tell the story of the Queen of Sheba and Solomon, I used a total of 8 cards. The included cards are: the Queen of Sheba, another king (person who may have told her of Solomon’s great wisdom), Solomon, Solomon’s kingdom, an ear for all that the Queen heard of Solomon’s great wisdom/kingdom, a camel to represent the caravan that she traveled in, and presents to give to King Solomon. Oh, yes, there is also a card with the Queen of Sheba asking questions and Solomon answering them. The preschoolers loved the story cards. I have found that any type of manipulative or visual is better than none. It helps to ensure engagement.

Add Props to Bring the Story to Life

Anytime you can bring props to class, do. Props give students tangible items to hold and touch. The more senses you can involve in a lesson, the more likely they are to connect to it and remember it. I used two sets of props when telling the story of the Queen of Sheba and Solomon. Since the Queen of Sheba brought jewels and spices with her to give to Solomon as gifts, those were the props I brought. The kids were eager to smell and pass around several different spices from my kitchen. Their eyes were also glued to me as I put on gold bangles and long, gaudy necklaces. They watched as I put several rings on my fingers. It was fun to add a bit of whimsy to the lesson with these simple props.

Queen of Sheba and Solomon Coloring Sheet and Craft

Coloring sheets in Sunday School are always an easy way to add in a hands-on activity. The downside to coloring sheets is that kids get tired of them. They long for something more and different than the norm. This is where the cut & paste activity sheet comes in handy. We gave four cut-out presents to each student to represent the Queen of Sheba’s gifts to Solomon. I printed the gifts on different-colored paper so that they would stand out from the white paper. The students seem to enjoy this activity more than just a coloring sheet. There is something about gluing that preschoolers love.
