I think sometimes we focus so much on teaching our children the stories from the Bible that we forget about teaching kids about the Bible. We fail to impress upon their hearts what the Bible is, why it is important, and that it is true and real. The Bible is the very word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16 states:
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.
Children, even preschoolers, need to be taught that the Bible is not like any other book and that the stories and characters were real people. Preschoolers grow up hearing fairy tales and imaginary stories. We need to tell them that the stories from the Bible were real and true. They are not make-believe. The “Let’s Find the Bible” game isn’t much, really. However, it doesn’t take much to have fun with preschoolers and young learners. Just remember the key elements of any game, energy and movement! If you are positive and excited about something, they usually will be too! Add some movement into whatever it is you are doing, and you’ve got a winner!
Before class, I print 2-3 of the Bible clipart sheets. This will give me 12-18 Bibles. I cut them out and hide them around the room.I like to tell my students that the Bible is the guide that God gave us to help us. The Bible guides us and gives us answers to questions we may not know the answers to. Next, I tell them that there are hidden Bibles around the room and that we must find them.
Here’s how it works. On the whiteboard, write the question “What is the Bible?” at the top. Below it, set up the answer The Bible is God’s Word using blank lines, similar to a hangman-style puzzle. Write a small number under each blank to show the order of the letters. For example, the word The would have three blanks labeled 1, 2, and 3.
Hide the printed Bible pictures around the room. On the back of each picture, write one letter from the answer along with its matching number in the corner (for example, T–1, H–2, E–3). When children find a Bible, they bring it to you. Turn the picture over, read the letter and number together, and place the letter in the correct blank on the board. As the class finds more Bibles, the letters are revealed and the hidden answer slowly appears. This is an effective way to reinforce that the Bible is God’s word, but in a way that involves their little bodies moving!
Singing Bible songs is a wonderful way to reinforce what children are learning. Simple songs like “The B-I-B-L-E Song” help early learners remember that the Bible is God’s Word, while “Thy Word Is a Lamp Unto My Feet” introduces the idea that the Bible guides us in our daily lives. These songs work well during circle time, transitions, or as a fun way to wrap up your lesson.
