This Owl Unit Study is fun, interactive, and hands-on! Your students will remember the Owl Unit Study more than others for one reason: the owl pellet lab. It is so worth it though! In this unit, you will find a visually appealing slideshow about owls, guided notes, an owl fact sheet, draw & describe activity, videos, and more!

The Draw and Describe Owls activity is a fun way to start a new unit study. Most children already have some knowledge of owls and are willing to share what it is they know. In this activity, encourage your students to draw an owl on their sheet and then describe owls. This is a great way to include the whole family in the opening activity. Our co-op group did a similar version of this activity. All kids, regardless of age, drew owls using the how-to sheets and then as a group brainstormed facts and details about owls they knew. Great anticipatory set!
This set of 9 owl coloring sheets is for fun. There is a variety of owl images for yours to color and doodle on. Thank you to ClipArt Library for these images. My girls are avid artists right now and often ask for me to print out coloring sheets for them to decorate. This set came about after one of those afternoons! These are also appropriate for older students. Some students are able to focus on educational videos and lectures easier if they have something to draw on while listening. Just a thought!
Our Owl Fact Sheet is perfect for younger students and for those students who flourish with a doodle sheet during a lecture or video. Personally, I used this fact sheet for a large group during a lecture on owls. It allowed younger students to color and take home the main points of the owl unit study.
The All About Owls Guided Notes is ideal for a traditional classroom setting and if you are training a child to be able to take notes. Note taking is a skill that students must learn to do. These guided notes help a student to begin learning this skill. The notes follow the slideshow along verbatim. There is an original copy of the notes included to act as a teacher’s key. For science teachers that require a science notebook, these guided notes fit well into your student goals for learned organization.
Besides reading library books, we like to start our Owl Unit Study with our All About Owls slideshow. It is the perfect science reader for students learning about the main characteristics of owls. In this 25-slide presentation, students will be engaged with stunning photography and interesting facts. The All About Owls slideshow leads students to an owl pellet investigation lab.

The Owl Pellet Investigation Sheet is great for older elementary students and middle school students. It allows students to truly take in all the scientific aspects of the owl pellet dissection. This investigation sheet is ideal for traditional settings.
After your student views the All About Owls slideshow, your child is ready to dissect an owl pellet. Have a bone chart ready and your owl pellet ordered. Years ago, I led classes in owl pellet dissection. It was common for them to share an owl pellet. Recently, our science co-op class used a number of the resources on this page to dissect an owl pellet. For your real science lovers, they will love this lab! Our kids found so many skulls and bones beneath all of the fur and grossness! Order your owl pellet today!
This free Owl Pellet Bone Chart is supplied by Carolina.com. When dissecting an owl pellet, a good rule of thumb is to encourage your students to lay their bones out on the bone chart. Students should match the bones they find to the bone chart.
Years ago, this dichotomous key was used in an owl pellet project assigned to our middle school students. It may be of use to those of you wanting to teach your child how to use one. Using one of the skulls in your owl pellet dissection, use this dichotomous key to identify your owl pellet’s skull.
Our Owl Pellet Investigation Pack includes an engaging 25-page editable PowerPoint, guided notes, owl fact sheet, Owl Pellet Investigation Lab Sheet, Draw & Describe activity, owl coloring sheets, and more! Every downloadable PDF on this page will be conveniently emailed to you in one go. For those of you teaching a co-op class, it will be helpful to have an editable PowerPoint to use for specific needs. Check it out here!
