Free Country Fact Sheets

When introducing geography, it is the world map and the learning of the 7 continents and 5 oceans that we start with. Over the years, we have used several different world map activity sheets. Even though the activity sheets are similar, we feel it is important to ensure our students know the continents, oceans, and major countries within.

The FREE Printable World Map Cut & Paste Activity Sheet is great for those students still in the earlier elementary grades. At this age, some students are still working on their fine motor skills making writing small labels difficult. Hence, being able to cut and paste the continent and ocean labels onto the map is ideal for these students in transition.

This FREE Printable World Map Fill-in-the-Blank Activity Sheet is appropriate for older elementary students. Your older elementary students are capable at this point of labeling the continents and oceans successfully. If you would rather them not color the map, then don’t. However, I find coloring the map in coloring pencils creates a finished map that is eye-catching and visually appealing.

World Map Questions

After working with your student on basic geography skills including being able to locate the continents and 5 oceans, use this activity sheet to gauge their understanding of directions (North, South, East, West). I still remember the mnemonic device we used in grade school to remember the directions- Never Eat Shredded Wheat. The World Map Questions focus on being able to use a compass. Students are asked to place a S for South, N for North, E for East, and W for West on the world map. Then students are asked questions that will test their ability to use a compass.

We have used Seterra for years. I love the variety of activities they offer concerning geography skills. Seterra is for those students that truly enjoy geography, puzzles, and challenges. They also have tons of FREE Printable maps and activities! Check out Seterra!

Geography Workbooks & Curriculum...

Some of you would feel better if you had a geography activity book to work through with your student. You might want to try 180 days of Geography. We start using the Abeka Geography Workbook in the 3rd grade and up until then we use activity sheets like the ones above including creating our own U.S. States books and completing Country Fact Sheets. One activity that we like to do in the elementary years that reviews geography skills and others is the Where in the World Project. However you decide to fit geography into your homeschool, enjoy it!

Looking for a more Permanent Curriculum?

For the first few years of homeschooling, I created and put together my oldest sons curriculum. On one level, I enjoyed this. It was fun to look at all of the free options and ideas on the web. On the other hand, I got overwhelmed and distracted like a kid in a candy store. As I had more children, life became busier too. It became evident to me that ordering workbooks and textbooks to guide us was ideal for our schedule and life. I still create interactive units to supplement and meet individual needs, but I have found that the workbooks give us  a sense of direction and consistency.

For me, compiling engaging curriculum for each of my kids became time consuming and daunting. It is a huge blessing being able to buy math and grammar workbooks. It gives me a piece of mind to know that I am not skipping around or leaving gaps in their education. Some of you may scoff at this. I am not condemning those that go it wholly on their own. Personally, it was just too much. If I was unable to purchase these books, then of course I would change my strategy to use more readily accessible materials.
