Branches of the Military
These Branches of the Military Printables are helpful and effective at teaching the basic similarities and differences between each branch of the military. Even though the military serves and protects the United States of America as a whole, each branch has its own special purpose. Students will be able to identify the 6 branches along with their core responsibilities. Amongst the Branches of the Military Printables, you will find an informational slideshow, graphic organizers, book recommendations, and video suggestions.
Be sure to check out our other Social Studies unit studies including our American Flag resources and the Revolutionary War resources. For all you teachers out there looking for the editable PowerPoint… you can find that in our Branches of the Military PowerPoint Pack.

Branches of the Military Slideshow
Our Branches of the Military Slideshow is a great way to introduce your students to the branches of the military. It is 10 slides long and gives a general overview of the Department of Defense along with images showing the Pentagon. Each branch is described, defined, and briefly summarized. I use this slideshow to guide students through filling out the graphic organizer. Students may want to research each branch to give a deeper explanation of the levels of power and training that participants go through. In that case, be sure to use the Branches of Military Project Book.

Branches of the Military Graphic Organizers
We used this graphic organizer when we studied the divisions of the military. It was helpful for students to record what they learned while viewing the slideshow. We also viewed videos before filling this out. Seeing visuals of what the participants do and how they train helped my kids to know what to draw. It is easy to modify this graphic organizer since there are three different versions. One has lines closer together when writing, one has lines a little further apart, and the third has no lines at all. This makes it easy to accommodate those who should be expected to write more and smaller and then those that still write larger and not as neat.
Branches of the Military Activity Book
In several of our other unit studies, we have made use of this type of writing and drawing activity. You can find our other Draw & Write activity packs here. I love it when you can incorporate writing into other subjects. It is ideal to combine learning, especially in our homeschools. Students will be encouraged to describe the branch of the military titled on each page and then draw an illustration that depicts that branch. Be sure to check out our other Writing resources here.
Branches of the Military Coloring Pages
Depending on the class or the age of kids, coloring pages are always useful to have. This set of coloring pages features at least one coloring page per branch of the military.
Add Books and Videos to your Study
There are a lot of books that can seamlessly work into your study of the branches of the military. The book featured is one that we have had on hand for years. So, it was a convenient choice for us. It only provides the most basic information and does not include the newest branch of the military, Space Force.
Not only should you try to add in some library books, but also add in some educational videos. It is always important to give the students visuals of the real thing so that they can put what they learned into context.
