Free Spelling and Vocabulary Curriculum

I liked spelling when I was a kid. In the third grade, I studied like mad to memorize a list of spelling bee words. When the day of the spelling bee came, I hung in until they started to present us with words that weren’t on the list. I got out on the word LEPRECHAUN. You may wonder why I am talking about a spelling bee that must have been over 30 years ago. Because when it came time to teach my kids how to spell, I implemented the things I remembered doing as a kid. Write them. Memorize them. Write sentences with them. Look them up in the dictionary, etc. Even though it seemed to work for my older kids, it didn’t work out so well for my younger ones. This is where I put the FREE Spelling and Vocabulary Curriculum to use!

What made me rethink our Spelling Routine?

Although doing all those activities can be beneficial when learning to spell words, something was missing for my fourth child. Despite our efforts, she wasn’t becoming as successful at spelling as her older siblings. I was baffled and discouraged… so was she. My first three kids seemed to be successful with my Spelling Tasks Packs approach. Why wasn’t it working for all of my children? This is where I was when I went searching for FREE SPELLING AND VOCABULARY CURRICULUM. I pray that the resources below can help you find what works for you and your student.

FREE Spelling and Vocabulary Curriculum

Spelling Tasks Packs 1st- 5th

I still believe that most kids can learn to spell effectively using the Spelling Tasks Pack, provided that the teacher breaks down words uses a word list that is appropriate for their students. I think that this was my problem. The word list we were using wasn’t the best for the phonetic approach we needed to take. I had success with Chat GPT in creating new spelling lists based on common phonemes, such as short and long vowels, digraphs, blends, and more. Truth be told, we will probably go back to Spelling Tasks Packs eventually. But for now, I think we need a reset button pushed.

UnSocialized Website

The free spelling and vocabulary curriculum offered on the UnSocialized Website are pretty awesome. Tracy Kmosko has done an amazing job at uploading some fantastic free spelling and vocabulary workbooks in the form of workbooks and resource pages. For someone who was looking for a change from our norm, I was thrilled to find so many quality workbooks for free!

Mom Delights

The mom at Mom Delights is a seasoned homeschool mom with experience. She has used tried-and-true resources such as the McGuffey’s Eclectic Spelling Book to create a 78-page download that she has named “Splendid Spelling.” It teaches blends, digraphs, spelling rules, and more. Splended Spelling is a gentle approach to spelling. It is intended for students in early elementary school, yet if you have a struggling reader, the lessons may be useful to add to your homeschool as an intervention. It is phonics-based.

Vocabulary 4-Square Organizers

Are you looking for a new way to tackle vocabulary? Try the Vocabulary 4-Square Graphic Organizers. There are 13 options to choose from. These organizers will ask your student to define, illustrate, identify the synonym/antonym of a word, and or write a sentence using the word. Different variations are presented to meet many needs, including blank versions. Look at all of the Vocabulary Graphic Organizers available in this pack. You are sure to find just the right one!

Spelling Training

Spelling Training is an effective way to change your spelling routine! It offers a variety of games and spelling practice that you can use on its own or with your spelling curriculum as a supplement. No matter how you use it in your homeschool, Spelling Training is a valid teaching tool to keep in your toolbox.
