How to Use the Read Build Write Printables...
In the “Read” box, write the word that you want your student to focus on. For example, write “the.” In the “Build” box, the student will use magnetic letters, stamps, or scrabble letters to build the word.
Another option for the “Build” box is to give your child cut-out pieces of construction paper with the letters from the word written on each piece. They will then unscramble the letters to create the word and glue it. For us, this is the easiest option. Lastly, the student will write “the” in the Write box. Download below.
Build a word without writing involved...
For my youngest learners, I use the homemade version of READ and BUILD. I do this since my youngest students aren’t always ready to write yet. Their hands just aren’t ready to write without much frustration. So, we modify the activity to work within their current skill set. All you need is large (small would probably work) index cards, a stick glue, and a marker. First, write the sight word you want to focus on in large clear writing using a marker. We wrote ours on construction paper to give it a pop of color. Next, cut the letters out individually.
Then have your student build the word using the letters available. Depending on the ability of my student, I may ask them to glue the “t” or the letter that makes the “t” sound. After the child has built the sight word, he can write the sight word on the back of the card if he can.
