EARTH'S WATER UNIT
EARTH’S WATER UNIT has free printables and activities to help you teach the distribution of water on Earth, the differences between salt and fresh water, and why water is important. Without water, we would cease to exist. Water is essential for life. Below you will learn why water is important, how we use water, and how water is distributed on the Earth in Earth’s Water Unit. You will also investigate the difference between salt and fresh water. This unit includes slideshows, printables, graphic organizers, experiments, and more! You may also want to check out our Water Cycle page.
*We offer all of these resources with updated editable PowerPoint versions of the slideshows, guided notes, and the rest of the printables in our Distribution of Earth’s Water Pack. Be sure to check out all of our Science Units, Labs & Experiments, and more here!

WATER GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS
Graphic organizers are useful tools to use for organizing and collecting information. Not only do they help with sorting through new material, but they are also effective in assisting a student in retaining knowledge.
Start the Earth’s Water Unit with one of these two concept maps. Brainstorming at the beginning of a new unit is always a great idea. One of the concept maps focuses on the questions, “How do we use water?” This is an effective lead into the question: Why is water important?
The second concept map is titled, “Facts about Water.” This one is useful when teaching a student how to gather pertinent information. While reading books or videos about water, encourage your student to record facts or notes about water. This one could be paired with the Water Fast Facts Slideshow below.
WATER FAST FACTS SLIDESHOW
This slideshow is a fun introduction into the study of water. It was created with multi-age students in mind. It covers one Water Fast Fact per page. There are 11 Water Fast Facts.
*An updated editable PowerPoint version of our Water Fast Facts is offered in our Distribution of Earth’s Water Pack.
EARTH'S WATER BOOKLET
This booklet was made to accompany the Earth’s Water Slideshow that you can easily access below. The booklet is an educational tool that can be used to show how Earth’s water is dispersed. It forces the student to use the information in the slideshow to answer the questions and complete the graphs correctly. Science students should be able to use graphs of various kinds to model data.
Salt water and fresh water sources are featured in this booklet. I encourage you to discuss with your child the meaning of the charts and graphs along with the irony of the vast amount of water on Earth as opposed to the small percentage of fresh water accessible to the masses. To create the Earth’s Water Booklet, print the booklet and then cut each page into fourths. Next, assemble the book in order and staple in the top left-hand corner. Easy activity when using the slideshow below to guide you. A lot of information is covered in a small booklet.
EARTH'S WATER SLIDESHOW
This slideshow features the percentages of water distribution on Earth. It explains the two types of water found on the Earth: saltwater and fresh water. It gives examples of Earth’s saltwater and fresh water resources. This is an effective tool to use with your elementary and middle school students. We suggest using the free printable Earth’s Water Booklet above which follows the presentation.
*An Editable PowerPoint of this slideshow and Guided Notes are offered in our Distribution of Earth’s Water Pack. Be sure to check out our other Science Slideshows too!
DISTRIBUTION OF EARTH'S WATER DEMONSTRATION
The Distribution of Earth’s Water Demonstration is easy to implement. It requires very little preparation and has a minimal materials list. In any unit study, it is always a bonus if you can incorporate hands-on activities and visuals. This one is ideal since it visually shows how much salt water there is to fresh water. It also becomes glaringly obvious how little available fresh water there is. Read on to find out how you can implement this easy demo using only cups and a bottle of water! Check out the Distribution of Earth’s Water Demonstration!
EARTH'S WATER DISTRIBUTION ON EARTH
The Earth’s Fresh and Salt Water video shows a visual of how the water on the Earth is distributed. Even though there are several charts in the slideshows above depicting the percentages of salt and fresh water available on Earth, sometimes it is nice to see a real life example.
WHY CAN'T WE DRINK OCEAN WATER?
In this SciShow video, the differences between ocean water and the water you drink at home are presented. Your older kids may not appreciate this video as much as your elementary students. However, it is full of educational information.
Earth's Water Unit LAB INVESTIGATIONS
Will an egg float in fresh or salt water?
The Floating Egg Experiment will help your students investigate the difference in density between fresh and salt water. Use the FREE Floating Egg Experiment Lab Sheets to guide your students through this easy and hands-on experiment. Check out the Floating Egg Experiment here.
Will fresh water or salt water freeze faster?
If you are looking for another hands-on lab that further explores the differences between salt and fresh water, this one is for you! With a short materials list and the ability to talk to your students about salinity, freezing points, saturation, and more, this experiment is a score! Use the FREE lab sheets to create a meaningful science experience. Check out, “Does Fresh or Salt Water Freeze Faster?”
How does food coloring react to salt & fresh water?
Explore the density differences in this easy and no-fuss experiment! Using our FREE observation lab sheets, create a fun science lesson investigating density. It’s always a good idea to make use of easy materials and FREE resources to create a meaningful science experience! Check out How does food coloring react to salt and fresh water?
EARTH'S WATER CYCLE UNIT
Complete your water unit with the Earth’s Water Cycle Unit. Discover the various processes that water can undergo as it travels from a small rain droplet to a thriving river to an ocean. Only to make its way back to a raindrop again in the clouds overhead. Check out a slideshow, videos, printables, and more in our Earth’s Water Cycle Unit!
BE AWARE CHRISTIAN PARENTS
Do the words, “millions of years ago” or “billions of years ago” sound familiar. If you have read science related books to your children often enough you know that those two phrases appear frequently. Those phrases alone should tell you that the resource is not a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ or ignorant to such things. Christian based to include language that is specific towards the teaching of Evolution, Darwinism, and the Big Bang theory.
Just be aware that some of the educational sites you visit to help you teach the water cycle to your children will make mention of how long water has been on the Earth. Hence, how old the Earth is. And unfortunately, if you want your child to learn that God is the Creator of all things and that the Bible means what it says, then you need to correct the lies as they appear to your children. Water has not been on the Earth for billions or millions of years, but thousands of years. If you would like to learn more about the topic, please follow this link to Answers in Genesis. The authors will explain to you how each belief system derived their timeline. Happy learning!
Food for thought...
Looking for a more permanent science curriculum? Even though we pursue various science units that encompass labs and such, we also use a science textbook each year. Some might say that our science units supplement our textbook, while others would say the opposite to be true. The labs, experiments, graphic organizers, videos, and other activities bring the textbook information to life.
We use Abeka Science textbooks. I love that they incorporate God and His sovereignty into their curriculum. When I taught in the public school system, I noticed that many of my students were lacking in vocabulary. This made it difficult for them to understand the why behind many of our investigations. Unfortunately, they were deficient in their background knowledge. Our science time would be lacking too if it weren’t for the rich vocabulary and science language that we find in our science textbook and readers.
