Our Free Scientific Method Unit would not be complete without a science reader. The Scientific Method slideshow is an ideal introduction. It allows students to see how scientists’ inquiry leads them to create and test hypotheses. The general vocabulary of terms is covered while supplying an example posing question. *To download the PowerPoint version of this slideshow, check out The Scientific Method PowerPoint Pack.
No matter what age your student is, the Scientific Method is always applicable in learning and investigating science. The Scientific Method Cards can be printed on card stock and laminated. These cards can be used over again and again. It is especially helpful for students when conducting their own science experiment or science fair presentation. Labs are fun, but it is the data and conclusion that is most important.
This is a great poster to keep in your science notebook or laminate as a poster in your school area. To use as an activity, cut the rows into strips and have your child put the steps of the scientific method in order.
The Scientific Method 7-page Packet will encourage the investigation of the scientific method. I use this packet over the course of 4-7 days depending on the age and size of the class. Working together, the teacher and student will explore the steps of the scientific method.
The first page of the packet is a great time for students to personalize the packet. You can encourage them to write the definition of the scientific method on the cover or draw pictures that depict the scientific method. The Scientific Method Packet reviews the process of the scientific method including how to write a hypothesis, writing steps for an experiment, identifying variables, and creating different graphs to organize data.
These 2 lab sheets are simple recording sheets that will work with just about any scientific experiment. Students are asked to fill in basic information about their experiment: posing question, hypothesis, procedure, observations, and conclusion. Each of the lab sheets require students to answer similar questions. However, the sheets do vary, and one may be more appropriate for your student than another. Some appropriate labs to use the Science Lab sheets with are our Candle and Oxygen Lab or our Dissolving Candy Canes lab.
Super cool video! Chock full of useful information about the scientific method. The illustrator is captivating. This is probably for a little older crowd- 3rd grade and up. Give it a go! Thanks to Sprouts for creating it!
SCIENTIFIC METHOD SONG
Science songs can be cheesy, but I think that is what I like about them! Kids may laugh and say, “Ahhh, Mom. Really?” But truthfully, they always enjoy it. The key is making this song a success is to be cheesy too! Sing it. Dance to it. Happy learning!
ROAD KILL EXPERIMENT by Mark Rober
Mark Rober conducts his ROADKILL EXPERIMENT. In this experiment, he tests the question, “Which do cars hit more?” He shows his data and the funny instances that occur along the way! Entertaining view of the scientific method!
Kids love doing science instead of just reading about it. The PAPER AIRPLANE EXPERIMENT is perfectly paired with the study of the scientific method or even the history of flight! This experiment is inexpensive, accessible, and doesn’t make a mess! CHECK IT OUT!
COIN LAB
The Coin Lab is the perfect lab to practice the scientific method. One reason why this lab is great for home use is because of the short materials list. All you will need to perform this hands-on experiment is an eyedropper, cup of water, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny. In this lab, you will test how many water droplets each coin will hold before overflowing. CHECK IT OUT!
Food for thought...
Looking for a more permanent science curriculum? Even though we pursue various science units that encompass labs and such, we also use a science textbook each year. Some might say that our science units supplement our textbook, while others would say the opposite to be true. The labs, experiments, graphic organizers, videos, and other activities bring the textbook information to life.
We use Abeka Science textbooks. I love that they incorporate God and His sovereignty into their curriculum. When I taught in the public school system, I noticed that many of my students were lacking in vocabulary. This made it difficult for them to understand the why behind many of our investigations. Unfortunately, they were deficient in their background knowledge. Our science time would be lacking too if it weren’t for the rich vocabulary and science language that we find in our science textbook and readers.
