Moon Phases Oreo Lab
What makes our printable version of the Moon Phases Oreo Lab different? For starters, we offer several versions of this lab that other sites don’t… and it’s free! The Moon Phases Oreo Lab has been around for a while. Over the years, I’ve learned that buying lots of Oreo cookies can get expensive, and I’ve also run into students with food allergies. So, the printable lab sheets offered here allow you to use Play-Doh, other cookies, or even draw the phases as opposed to using Oreo cookies! Given the number of students with food allergies, I prefer to offer an option that doesn’t rely on food. Sorry for the confusion, but Oreo Cookies are not required for this lab!

How to Implement the Moon Phases Lab
When teaching in a classroom setting, I implement this Moon Phases lab in cooperative groups. In our homeschool, we first read about moon phases and what causes them, and then worked on the Moon Phases Lab at the dining table, family-style. I put the moon phases poster up on the computer to make it easier for them. Each kid was given several cookies, a plate, and plastic silverware. This equipped them to shape the cookie icing into the shapes that we see from Earth as moon phases. You could also use Play-Doh or let your students use colored pencils to shade in the part we can not see.
What is in the set of printables?
The Moon Phases Lab download includes 9 printables. Be sure to look through the variations and print out the moon phases poster for groups or students to use while completing the moon phases lab. Visually, this will help your students identify the moon phases.
