Teaching Thankfulness Printables
Teaching Thankfulness isn’t always easy to do. The best method in this case seems to teach, model, and then pray. Even though I believe that the activities below can be beneficial in teaching thankfulness, it is more important for them to see you as an example of a thankful person. You can explain to them what being thankful means, but showing them will make a bigger impact on the people they become. Teach them what thankfulness looks like and what it doesn’t. Thankfulness comes easier for some than others. In the end, if they can learn to recognize and be thankful for all the blessings and grace they have in their life, then hallelujah! My Thankful Tree
We have a lot to be thankful for. Oftentimes, we take our blessings for granted. It is easy for us to negate them since we have so much. We also compare what we have to others and find ourselves coveting what someone has as opposed to being thankful for what we do. That is why it is so important for us to take the time to think about all the good things in our life. The “My Thankful Tree” is a sweet activity for younger students who are learning about being thankful. However, it can be used with older students too. This one of my favorite Teaching Thankfulness Printables!
I am thankful for... cards
These cards are perfect to use as an anticipatory set at the beginning of a class. They are also just the thing for your Thanksgiving day. Set them on your table with a cup of pens to encourage a pre-dinner activity. Since we have a large co-op group that celebrates Thanksgiving with a potluck, these are excellent to use as an icebreaker. Younger kids can draw on them, while older kids write what they are thankful for. There are also 4 scripture cards that are ideal to use as decoration hanging by clothespins on a string across your mantle or on a Thanksgiving table. Download your own I am Thankful for Cards today!
The “What am I thankful for?” booklet is an interactive emergent reader. You can choose to print this booklet full length or print two sheets to a page to create a smaller booklet, which is what we prefer to do when using it strictly as a book. This booklet features repetitive sentence structure and sight words, which is perfect for early elementary students. Work with your student to read through each sentence while encouraging him to draw a corresponding picture. One year, we used one sheet per day leading up to Thanksgiving. Whatever works for you and yours. Download your WHAT AM I THANKFUL FOR BOOKLET HERE!
Thankful BINGO
Our Thankful BINGO game is fun for young and old! It is the perfect game to play with your family or small group. The FREE version has 10 game cards, which is plenty for most families and small groups. If you need more than 10 cards, take a look at our 30-game card set here. Remind your kids of all the things they have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!
Free Thanksgiving Coloring Pack
During the week of Thanksgiving, my kids are often watching me cook, clean up, or just prepare for the upcoming day of food and family. This FREE Thanksgiving Coloring Pack is perfect for those times when I need the kids to have an activity that they can do on their own. It is also a fun activity to print out for all those young kiddos that are coming to your house on Thanksgiving Day. Download FREE Thanksgiving Coloring Pack.
Thanksgiving Emergent Readers
I love emergent readers. They are versatile, easy, and you can color on them! It isn’t uncommon for me to color an emergent reader right next to my young reader. We offer three Thanksgiving themed emergent readers that you can download here.
What am I thankful for? Writing Sheets
There are 2 “I am thankful for…” sheets. The first is intended for your earliest learners. Encourage them to draw all the things they are thankful for. If they are able, have them label the things/people they are thankful for. You may even want to trace their hand and then ask them for 5 things they are thankful for. For toddlers, write what it is they are thankful for in the outline of the fingers. The second sheet is intended for a student that can draw and write what it is they are thankful for. Encourage them to write complete sentences to describe what they drew. You can find all of our Draw & Write sheets here. Happy Thanksgiving… we have a lot to be thankful for.
Thankful Wreath Craft
Some kids just love to do crafts! We created this “Thankful Wreath” as an alternative to the “My Thankful Tree.” Truth be told, some of mine did both. The true crafters in my family kept asking to do another “My Thankful Tree,” so that is how the Thankful Wreath came to be. This craft features two Bible verses, I Thessalonians 5:16 and Psalm 100:4. Both of these verses focus on thanksgiving and thankfulness.
Thankful ABC's
Challenge your kiddos to produce 26 people, things, talents or attributes that they are thankful for. 26 is a BIG number, but what if those 26 items must coincide with the letters of the alphabet! For example, A is for animals, B is for bread, and so forth. We plan on using this at our homeschool co-op as a group challenge. What fun!
