Community Helpers Unit

Community Helpers Unit

Studying and learning about Community Helpers is a common unit to cover during the early years. Students will love to learn about the different roles people play within our communities. You may decide to explore deeper into a certain profession depending on your child’s interest. It is amazing to see what occupations catch your child’s particular attention. In this Community Helpers Unit, you will find slideshows, printables, videos, and more! Be sure to check out our other elementary unit studies here.

Introduce community helpers unit with great books...

With any unit study, the books you choose can make or break your unit study. The one suggested is one of many that could potentially help you create an awesome community helpers unit. Within community helpers, you could easily highlight certain community helpers reading a different book each day. You could choose a book solely on firefighters, police officers, or doctors. The options are endless. It really depends on what jobs you are wanting to focus on.

Some kids are naturally more creative and imaginative than others and pretend play is an effective way for them to act out what they learning. There are several pretend play kits that can help to create a fun and interactive learning environment. Try a doctor’s kit or a grocery clerk to really bring your community helpers to life!

For those students who are ready to write, give them one of these Draw & Write Sheets focused on Community Helpers. Use both of the writing prompts or only one. The first prompt asks the writer, “Why are community helpers important in your community?” while the second one asks the writer, “Which community helper would you like to be and why?” Be sure to check out all of our Draw & Write sheets.

Community Helpers Hands-on Activity

community helpers unit

I bought this Community Helpers Bulletin Board set years ago. It became one of those purchases that we actually used. This same set has been used for each one of my children, sometimes more than once. All of the images you see are meant to be punched out and applied to a board. However, I attach them with tape to the wall or window. My student gets to match the tools with the community helper. It is a fun activity and it allows us to refer back to each community helper as we read or watch videos. Great buy!

Field Trip - Community Helpers Style

Community Helpers Unit

Check out the opportunities available to you from your local community helpers. We have a real dairy farmer across the street from us. I just recently realized that they offer free group farm tours. Our fire department is also very hospitable. They will annually host Fire Station Tours. Even if you and yours aren’t able to schedule an official walk-through, there are many creative ways to incorporate a “community helper” themed outing. Take a special trip to a large library downtown or to a specialized bakery. What about the animal shelter? Have fun with it.

Community Helper Videos

Here are some videos that we used, but this is just a sliver of the whole pie… hope you get my meaning. There are so many informative videos out available on YouTube for free that it seems futile to list them all! You can easily look up community helpers as a broad topic or narrow your search down to visiting a post office or exploring a police car. The options are endless.

Community Helpers for Kids

This community helpers video asks your student questions about what community helper would assist them doing a particular job. It covers a wide array of roles filled within your community.

Post Office Field Trip

How to write, address, and mail a letter at the post office is a simple, yet effective task for an early learner. Encourage your student to write a loved one a letter. Show them how to address the envelope and where to put a stamp on the envelope. Letting your child put the envelope in the mailbox or even dropping it in the post office box can be made into a memorable learning moment. Enjoy!

Take a Field Trip to the Police Station

Kids are often fascinated with the police and may even have preconceived ideas about them. This video helps to clear up what it is that the police do and why. A great follow-up activity is the Fingerprint Investigation Station print-out below, which features a child’s one of kind fingerprints!
