New Creation in Christ Craft
The New Creation in Christ Craft is an easy hands-on activity. This printable craft is ideal for elementary students. It can be adapted to fit students 1st through 5th. There are two versions of the New Creation in Christ Craft. The first features Isaiah 44:22 and the other II Corinthians 5:17. We used this craft in our 3rd-4th grade class. Read how our Sunday School made these crafts to learn about the gospel.

Prep for the New Creation in Christ Craft
To start with, print the butterfly page on card stock and the caterpillar page on regular computer paper. There are two different versions of the caterpillar page to accommodate two different verses. Either verse can be used to illustrate that God takes our old self (caterpillar) and can turn us into a new creation or new self. You will need crayons, scissors, and glue sticks. As the teacher, you will want to talk your students through this craft so that the gospel is shared with understanding.
How to make the New Creation in Christ Craft
Start by talking about caterpillars and how they look. They can be scary, squishy-looking, and covered with spikes. Caterpillars are not considered pretty. On the contrary, they can be ugly. They represent our hearts before Jesus. We are sinners despite our best efforts to be good. Also, when the world hurts us, there is no one who can heal us, protect us, or forgive us like Jesus. Our best attempts are like Band-Aids. We try to treat the symptoms of sin rather than seek out the cure- Jesus.
During this time, students should be coloring their caterpillar. Next, instruct the kids to cut the caterpillar and the verse out.
Ok, the next part might seem tricky to kids. So, be prepared to help them fold. Look at the image and note where the dotted lines are. These are approximate lines of folding. I like to fold the card stock so that it lines up vertically with the center of the butterfly’s body.
After folding, close the booklet. Students will need to cut their caterpillar in half, right down the middle vertically. This way, the student can then adhere the caterpillar on either side of the closed front.
Next, encourage your students to write the words, “Old Self,” at the top. They can write other words too that describe sinners before Jesus. Some may include: lost, sin, darkness, etc.
Use the New Creation in Christ Craft to share the Gospel
Now, it is time to reiterate how when we open our hearts to Jesus (open the booklet), He saves us from our sin. He changes our hearts and minds towards things that are pure. Students can color the butterfly now and glue the verse underneath it. This would be a good time to write the words, “New Self,” at the top of the inside.
Read the verse to the kids and talk about what it means. Christ makes us a new creation. Now, this does not mean we will be sinless or perfect, but we now have a Savior who we can turn to. He is the only one who can save us from our sin. Because we are sinners, we do not deserve eternal life. Jesus died on the cross for our sin so that we too could be with the Father through His grace.
